Government By Example

May 16, 2008

Levi Stoltzfoos is looking at the prospect of spending the next decade or more of his life in prison. Mr. Stoltzfoos, American, a 39 year-old citizen of this county, could be locked up for violating a law which is intended to prevent money laundering, tax evasion, or using money for other criminal activities.

There was no evidence introduced in Mr. Stoltzfoos' recent trial that he was engaged in any of these criminal activities intended to catch drug dealers, terrorists, mobsters. (Click to read more)

Another Bad Move by Commissioners

May 9, 2008

The current board of Lancaster County Commissioners - Stuckey, Martin, Lehman - have certainly stumbled out of the blocks.

Within weeks of taking their oaths, all three violated the Sunshine Law by holding an illegal public meeting. They were forced to re-hold the meeting and an unconstitutional park restriction passed the previous week was tabled.

Then the board allowed the very able county administrator, Mark Esterbrook, to leave his job. As noted in this space previously, Esterbrook was the consummate professional, highly vetted, with impressive credentials. His dismissal reeked of cronyism and was a loss for the county. Now the Commissioners are about to welcome the law firm of Stevens & Lee back to county government, or at least an affiliate of the firm. (Click to read more)

Let 'Em Know!

May 2, 2008

We want to pause a moment to publicly thank the Lancaster County community for embracing the Lancaster Post.

When we launched this newspaper, we hoped to provide a credible, fun, and entertaining alternative to the local monopoly print press. And although we have admittedly been imperfect in execution, we have been thrilled with the reception and support of the Post from you, our readers. Thank you.

The Post has a small staff. In addition to the two publishers, Laurie Ulrich Fuller designs what we believe is the most attractive layout of any newspaper in the region. Our articles and advertisements don't crowd one another and are easy to read. This is due to Laurie's expertise and skill. She makes us look good. (Click to read more)

The Strange Departure of Mark Esterbrook

April 25, 2008

Recently, the Lancaster County Commissioners announced that County Administrator, Mark Esterbrook, was leaving his position and that he would receive a $40,000, full-benefits severance package. The county has no severance policy, so this was unusual. Also, Esterbrook was known as a particularly able and ethical professional.

So why is he gone?

Mr. Esterbrook was selected as administrator -- the person in charge of the day-to-day operations of the county -- a year ago after a lengthy review by an independent search committee. The committee consisted of the county clerk, the county solicitor, and a few department heads. This group was not appointed by the county commissioners, and the commissioners had no role in selecting the applicants, culling the pool, nor in recommending the finalists.

This independent committee then recommended three finalists to the commissioners and Mark B. Esterbrook was selected. (Click to read more)

Welcome to the Lancaster Post!

April 18, 2008

The paper you are holding represents the fresh air of competition now blowing through Lancaster County. For too long, one company has held a monopoly over print news coverage for the County. No longer.

Lancaster Post is a free, weekly newspaper that will cover the issues and events important to the people of Lancaster County. And, unlike the competition, we do so with no vested interests. In our first issue, we feature the next President of the United States. The Presidential candidates answer questions in an item we call "Side-by-Side," where we ask two (or more) sides of an issue the same questions and give them the same time and space to answer them. We were persistent, and were able to obtain the participation of Senator John McCain, Senator Barack Obama, Senator Hillary Clinton, and Congressman Ron Paul.

Our cover story looks at Paul Thibault, republican candidate for the state senate in the 13th District. Not much is known about Mr. Thibault, despite his many years as a public official. Post editor Ron Harper, Jr. takes a look at "The Real Paul Thibault" in this week's cover story. (Click to read more)
